This book portrays racism and racial identity within our society. Tatum (2003) defined racism as “a system involving cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as the beliefs and actions of individuals. Others define racism as ‘prejudice plus power’. When racial prejudice is combined with social power- access to social, cultural, and economic resources and decision-making – leads to the institutionalization of racist policies and practices” (Tatum, 2003 p. 7-8). Tatum (2003) and Delpit (2006) as well as Millner (2010) and MacLeod (2009) had significant discussion about race and racial identity. Delpit (2006) talked about the norms and standards that are set with the white mindset; as well as the code of power that is indeed in the hands of the whites. These norms and standards are disadvantage all the people with different racial and ethnic identity. She pointed out how these one sided standards can hurt children in the school system, because they come with different social and cultural capitals.
