Why Are Gangs Important

Gangs, or groups are really important because once you are in one, you feel like you belong, and you are most likely among people that care for you. Being in a gang, or in a squad is like having a second family, or your own family, depending on your relationship with your actually family. In the book, “Outsiders”, the greasers, and the Socs were two different gangs that were rivals. The gang is important to the greasers because the gang is the only true family some the greasers have. It is also important because being in a gang gives you a sense of belonging, and they help you whenever you are in trouble. These are some reasons as to why gangs are important to the Socs, and the greasers.
The first reason why gangs are important, is because they may be the only family a person might have. Take Johnny for instance, Johnny comes from a home where his dad is always drunk, and abusive, and his mom couldn’t care less about him. So, when he discovered the gang, and became a greaser, they basically became his family. This also applies to Dallas Winston. Dally was a wild boy, and his dad didn’t care about him either, so the gang also took him in, and they became his family as well. For instance, in the beginning of the book, Ponyboy got jumped by the Socs, and as soon as he started yelling for help Darry, and Sodapop came running towards him. (Even though Darry and Sodapop is Pony’s brother they're still in the same gang, so that should count.)
