Good Intentions, Bad Outcome: Why Cigarettes and Tobacco Shouldn’t Banned

In the 1920’s, America prohibited the selling, trafficking, and manufacture of any alcoholic beverages. It lasted for several years, until 1933, when it became legal again. Today, Many Americans want cigarettes banned, seeing how they are not healthy for people. However, I think banning a product that has been legal for a very long time would be a detriment to society. The act of banning these products would cause us to go down familiar roads leading to the same outcome as before. Cigarettes or any tobacco products should not be banned because it would cause more people to go to jail, more fines, less tax revenue, and more crime to occur.

I will dive deeper into the time period and how it could repeat itself. In the 1920’s, notorious Italian mobster, Al Capone, rose to power. Him and the italian mob did this by selling alcohol illegally. Capone became rich, making tens of millions a year. He didn’t exactly make it big without hurting people. Capone had to assassinate leaders of rival mobs and caused fear throughout the city. Even innocents were harmed just so he could sell some bourbon. In present day, Gangs and illegal drug trafficking are still common in many cities. With Marijuana legal in many states, dealers are selling drugs that very little of the population wants or uses, But if you add any Tobacco product in the mix, more and more will buy from these gangs. Billions are spent on tobacco products every year in this country. This would be horrible for the economy. The government gets a lot of tax revenue from these companies and without their consistent cash flow this would be a burden for the economy. With gangs competing to fill in that absence, it is bound to result in casualties. This would also make decent neighborhoods bad, and bad neighborhoods even worse.
