Why do Catholic Christians celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick?
What is the Scriptural basis of this Sacrament?
The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven Catholic sacraments. Catholic Christians celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in order to bless and heal a person, who has a bad sickness, physically and spiritually. The sacrament is a celebration in which those who are critically sick or unstable are circumscribed and supported by other member of the Christian community. Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, people are given forgiveness for their sins in their suffering, and they are cured in spirit and sometimes they experience the return of physical health. He unites our ordeals with his passion and death so that through our hardship we can cooperate in his redeeming and healing work. The sacrament also reminds people that God wants to give comfort to the suffering and wants people to relieve suffering where they can. The oil of the sick is special oil used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, and it is blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week. When a priest or a bishop celebrates the sacrament, he lays his hands on the ill person’s head. Then, he anoints the sick person on the forehead and palms of the hands with the sign of the cross with the oil of the sick, which is blessed by a bishop. This sign of the cross reminds Catholics that their salvation comes through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The reason a bishop or a priest put the oil on the forehead is because it is one of the most visible places on the human body, and Catholics think that their faith in Jesus Christ should be visible through their actions.
