In January 1918 the Kaiser, dictator of Germany, led his people in war with the allies. At this point Germany appeared to be winning the war. However in November 1918 the Kaiser fled to Holland and Germany unconditionally surrendered to the allies. President Friedrich Ebert was put in charge of Germany to sign the armistice. This motivated unrest within Germany’s people as they believed they were currently winning the war. President Ebert assisted in the creation of the Reichstag, the newly formed German government. This implemented the ally’s foremost ideas on how a country should be run, to a country which only recently lost a dictator. They were widespread throughout Germany with communists holding more power over the working class. Some held power in Berlin but since Weimar became the new capital it didn’t stop government management. The most well-known communist extremist group was known as the Spartacists, so named after the Italian slave leader, Spartacus. They saw themselves as slaves under democracy and wanted a communist system to be implemented. They were run by Rosa Luxemberg, a leading German socialist. The Spartacists captured the newspaper headquarters and the telegraph buildings on November 5th 1919. This of course failed as President Ebert ordered the Freikorps, the toughest ex-marines to arrest them. They loved Germany and saw these communists as an enemy to the German way of life. On their way to prison, Rosa Luxemberg and the other leaders were brutally murdered despite their instructions. Another large extremist group was the Kapp Putsch, they stood for fascism in 1920. When they attacked Ebert could not use the army as many members on the Kapp Putsch were ex-members. So with the army out of commission, Ebert called a General strike from the people. This broke the Kapp Putsch’s power and allowed Ebert and the other democratic leaders to return from hiding. Britain, France and America wanted their ‘Allied Strategy’ to be put in place, this would push all extremist parties to the fringes of society.
