Columbus and Lindbergh: A Journey Across The Atlantic “For the execution of the voyage to the Indies, I did not make use of intelligence, mathematics or maps”(“Christopher Columbus Quote.”). This is a quote from Christopher Columbus, one of the most prominent and well known explorers in history. As I typed this quote, I considered the differences between Christopher Columbus and Charles Lindbergh. Columbus and Lindbergh both travelled the Atlantic.
In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.
As a farewell present from the colonies Moraley didn’t have an easy sail. Sailing down the Delaware, the ship “was overtaken by my old Master Edmund Lewis, who demanded me of the captain, on account of an indenture between myself and him” but on a tight schedule the captain told the former master that if stayed on the ship he would surly have gone to sea along with the boat. (93) The next day the ship strung a leak, requiring both himself and the crew to pump continually. Finally, hoping to (finally) be dismissed, in Ireland the captain proclaimed that as soon as he had sold all his cargo would he would carry Moraley to the port of Whitehaven where his mother and sisters were residing.
The slaves were very confused at that point, and they waited to set sail across the Atlantic ocean. Yesterday, February 3rd, 1917,The American cargo ship, Housatonic , a German U-boat sank. In response, President Wilson broke off diplomatic relations with Germany the same day. The attack on Housatonic is the first time in history that a submerged submarine had successfully sunk another ship. Aboard the Union vessel, two officers and three men were killed while the crew took to the boats or climbed into the rigging to await rescue. The reason as to what led to the sinking is unknown at this time.
Although he never really accomplished what he what trying to do, Henry Hudson was still a very driven and persistent explorer. He was a leader to many other explorers, and he also helped inspire interest of America in Europe. In Hudson’s lifetime, he set out on four voyages. For three of these journeys he was partnered with England, and for the other, with the Netherlands. Henry Hudson is a great example of an explorer who kept trying even with adversity.

Horwitz, with little planning ahead of time, embarks on a journey to learn more about how America came to be what it is today. He indulges in the rich cultures of each place he visits, gaining more perspective on their ways of living and how that was impacted by the discovery of America. His overall goal was to rewrite history in a way that incorporates and finds a balance between both fact and myth.
The Atlantic Slave Trade was one of the largest and inhumane human slavery systems in history. William Wilberforce played a key part in its abolishment, however; he was not the sole person responsible for its downfall. William Wilberforce can be seen as the leader of the ‘abolitionist’s’, so it can be said that he had a large part to play in the slave trades abolition although there were other key people involved in its abolition like; Olaudah Equiano, John Newton, Thomas Fowell Buxton and Thomas Clarkson. There were also groups involved such as the Quakers and Women and Women’s groups. The abolishment of slavery was not due solely to the work of William Wilberforce because there were many people who aided him in his fight for its abolition
The purpose of the, Letter of Columbus, Describing the Results of his First Voyage, was to inform about his discoveries and formally claim new territories. Columbus wrote this letter to Luis de Santangel, secretary of the royal court of spain, and I think that Columbus just wanted to show off his accomplishments to the royal courts, especially to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel. I believe that the reason Columbus wanted them to know about everything that occurred was because he was sponsored by them and he just wanted to show them that the voyage was successful and not a fail. I noticed that throughout the letter, Columbus exaggerated a lot about his discoveries and the people he met; this might of been because he wanted the King and Queen

This article is a description of Sir Francis Drake’s voyage, detailing the specific events that transpired throughout the voyage. Throughout this paper I will be comparing and contrasting these two voyages. Sir Francis Drake and Ferdinand de Magellan both had a fleet of five ships that accompanied them on their voyage. In both voyages only one of the ships survived with most of the crew being either lost of dead. Both Drake and Magellan had some trouble with their crew.
