Androstenedione steroids were not very well known in athletics until 2002 when Mark McGwire admitted to using androstenedione steroids. Mark McGwire was a baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals and that season he set the all-time home run record for most home runs in a single season. The reason that this was a big deal was because Roger Maris, the former home run leader, had hit 60 home runs. But McGwire ended the season with 70 home runs. When it was discovered that McGwire used androstenedione, there was controversy on whether the record should still belong to him. The most popular scandal for steroid usage came during the 2013 season with the biogenesis scandal. The biogenesis scandal was reported in Miami that an anti-aging clinic had given high level baseball players steroids (The guardian). The baseball world was shocked from the number of players that were suspended in connection with the clinic. Among the players that were exposed, Nelson Cruz from the then Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez from the New York Yankees, Everth Cabrera of the San Diego padres, and Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers were all linked to this clinic. This was a huge issue because three of those players were all stars that year, and Alex Rodriguez has had major success in baseball. Another reason why this scandal was major was because Ryan Braun had won the MVP in 2011 so many believed the steroids helped him tremendously. Many of the players exposed during this scandal received a “50 game suspension” (Baseball-Almanac). This scandal was important because it highlighted actually how prominent steroids were still, and how big named players or players in general are still finding ways to improve their selves.
