Michael Sams is an English kidnapper, extortionist and murderer. He was born in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire. There was no information about his childhood. When he was 20 he joined the Merchant Navy. Sams was in the Navy 3 years then he returned to Keighley and worked as a lift engineer. After a while he graduated to become a central heating engineer. He then started his own company. Sams was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1970’s, causing the amputation of one of his legs. Some complications had come up with his company and he lost it so he started working for a different company selling power tools. In the 1980’s he started his own power tool business. That was the first crime he had ever committed. Fifteen years later on July 9, 1991 he kidnapped 18 year old Leeds sex- worker, Julie Dart. This was just a random act of Sams’. He had never done something like this before and there were no signs of any specific reasoning at the time. A few short days later her murdered Julie Dart. Six short months later Sams struck again. On January 22, 1992 he kidnapped estate agent, Stephanie Slater. Michael Sams held both women for ransom but only received money for the release of Stephanie Slater on January 31, 1992. After Stephanie was released when he received the money, he was arrested in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1995 Sams attacked a probation officer, Julie Flack. He called the estate agency that Salter worked for as “Mr. Southwall” and set up an appointment to view a semi- detached house in the Great Barr district. When Slater arrived to show the house a knife was held to her throat and she was forced into the vehicle of Michael Sams’. She was taken to the same workshop that Dart was held captive and murdered in. Only this time, Sams built an escape- proof- cell- wheelie bin with a lockable lid, but it was referred to as “coffin like”. He had told Stephanie that if she tried to escape she would be electrocuted, so she cooperated. At 12: 22 pm that day he called the estate agency that Stephanie worked for and said, “Stephanie’s been kidnapped. A ransom demand will be in the post tomorrow. If you contact police, she will die.” During the time of her kidnapping, Stephanie Slater kept calm and did what was asked of her.
