The purpose of this summary is to describe how the recession started, the events that led up to it, the size, and what happened in result. The recession started in July of 1981 and ended in November of 1982. In 1980, the United States economy was already in bad shape due to a 6 month long recession that the United States economy eventually made a modest recovery from. Although the short 1980 recession is not the focus of this report, it did play a part in the events that led up to the 1981-1982 recession.
"The Monkey's Paw" by W.W Jacobs in narrated through a third person viewpoint. This story is laced full of foreshadowing and has creepy tones that tie in with the eery sounding title. The author was able to talk about serious topics of the time while still being entertaining and still being catagorized into the horror genre. The story begins with a family having a good time in a cozy cottage out in the middle of nowhere and an unexpected visitor appears knocking at their door. The man presents them an Indian monkey's paw and he claims it has the power to grant three different users, three different wishes.
Foreshadowing is something all authors use when telling a story. This tells the readers an idea about what is going to happen later in the story. Foreshadowing is building tension in a story making the reader excited about what is to come. In the story ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ the author, Mr. Jacobs uses this skill.
In the story, “The Monkey’s Paw”, the White’s acquire a monkey’s paw from an old friend. The friend reveals that the paw is considered magic and then gives it to the Whites, starting a chain of events that brings sorrow to the family. However, just who is responsible for the misfortune that came to the Whites? Sergeant-
The experience with paw adds doubt to anything else to knock at their doorstep. Point 3: But the Whites explained their displeasure for the paw after experiencing the consequences. Explain: Placing blame on this foreign object, rather than taking responsibility for the selfishness the paw granted.

In “The Monkey’s Paw”, the same theme is shown through the description of the reaction of the White family following their realization that their greed ended up killing their son. “There was no reply; the old woman’s face was white, her eyes staring, and her breath inaudible; on the husband’s face was a look such as his friend the sergeant might have carried into his first action. ”(Jacobs, 91) the text read. We can conclude from this, that the White family feels great regret once they come to understand that the monkey’s paw only grants compensation for what it takes away. They clearly wish they hadn’t been greedy and tempted fate and had instead been satisfied with what they had.
Imagine you were granted three wishes; and that's all. You can make whatever wishes you desire, but if not justifiable or reasonable, there could be a price to pay. The short story "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs discusses the alarming tale of an older couple being granted "three wishes" from a monkey's paw given to them. However, the purpose of the paw isn't to grant wishes; it is to show that you shouldn't change your fate. The film adaptation of the short story by Ricky Lewis Jr. also showcases that moral.
In the story of the “The Monkey Paw” there was events of foreshadowing. When stories have foreshadow in them do they make it more suspense and tension? What i'm going to be talking about is what do they do to the story and does it add suspense and tension. In the story of “The Monkey Paw” there where more than two events where the author create suspense in the story.

They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it--seems that only children weep””(Pg.243) This quote portrays the assumption that African Americans are responsible for all mistakes even without rationally reasoning the situation. Although the trial was well fought in the end, there was no justice found for Tom.
With Morris’s face whitening, it tacitly tells the audience that something terrifying happened when Morris made his wishes. This foreshadows that something dreadful will happen once the Whites make their wishes. Question 2: Compare Mr. White’s feelings about the monkey’s paw when he makes the first wish, second wish, and third wish. How does his attitude change?
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. By using similes in a story the reader can help enhance the author's message in different ways. In the stories “The Monkey’s Paw” by W. W. Jacobs and “Canyons” by Gary Paulsen the authors use similes to help the reader visualize the setting and characters. In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw”, similes are used to help the readers visualize many things throughout the story.
The conflict in the story is not only the monkey’s paw but was somewhat Mr. White’s attitude. If he never was that greedy the story would have changed he would have agreed with Morris and burned the monkey’s paw but he didn’t want to do that creating the plot. Any change in the plot could have/ would have altered the course of the story but also altering the theme. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the downfall of the White family is when they receive the two hundred pounds as a compensation for the son’s death which was actually caused by messing with fate.
“Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality”-Edgar Allan Poe. All great horror stories represent that quote. There is one story that does not. “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs is not a horror story because there is not a monster, it is not believable, and it does not have a creepy setting. Classic horror stories usually have some sort of a monster in it, whether the monster is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Frankenstein.
In the short story, The Monkey 's Paw we are first introduced to the White, the Mrs.White, Mr.White, and their son, Herbert White. Later in the story, we are introduced to Sergeant Major Morris who brought the mummy-like monkey’s paw to the Whites house. The theme of the Monkey 's paw is to never interfere with fate. The theme is shown through many forms in the short story. The forms are the events, the foreshadowing, and the actions.
