As the French soon found out, the Spaniards had different fighting tactics, which was called guerrilla warfare. The French were kicked out from Valencia, and General Pierre Dupont, who had made his way into Andalusia was forced to retreat and finally surrender with his army at Bailén on July 23. Napoleon’s insistence for decisive battle benefitted the Russians at Borodino. Just prior to engaging Russian troops as Borodino, Napoleon told his troops “"Soldiers! Here is the battle you have so long desired! Henceforth, victory depends on you; we have need of it." While fighting at Borodino, General’s Ney and Davout requested that Napoleon send reinforcements to the south.

The Russians had two main things working for them during Napoleon’s attack. After the French Revolution, a Corsican artillery officer, named Napoleon Bonaparte, became the emperor of France in 1804. After playing a significant role in trying retake the French port of Toulon, occupied by the British, he was appointed general at the age of 26 in 1793. This marked the beginning of the Napoleonic Era, which would change the course of European history for centuries. However, despite claiming to be a strong supporter of the French Revolution, Napoleon mostly undermined the goals of the Revolution by violating the Declaration of the Rights of Man, insisting on returning to principles of the Old Regime in regards to women, the imposition of taxes and the re-establishment of the social elite. Nonetheless, Napoleon still supported the main goals of the Revolution by establishing the Civil Code and supporting the peasantry by lowering bread prices.
The French empire or the Napoleonic empire was the dominate land power of Europe. Napoleon had plans for total European domination by means of military and trade. He was close to succeeding but there was an obstacle in his way. The European empire stood in his way. They had power over the seas.
On June 16, 1815, he defeated the Prussians under Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher at Ligny, and sent 33,000 men, or about one-third of his total force, in pursuit of the retreating Prussians. On June 18, Napoleon led his remaining 72,000 troops against the Duke of Wellington’s 68,000-man allied army, which had taken up a strong position 12 miles south of Brussels near the village of Waterloo. In a fatal blunder, Napoleon waited until mid-day to give the command to attack in order to let the ground dry. The delay in fighting gave Blucher’s troops, who had eluded their pursuers, time to march to Waterloo and join the battle by the late afternoon.
Napoleonic Rule The late 1700’s was a time of great discontent in France. The people of France revolted against their government in an attempt to gain power in political decision making. In this time, France experienced many forms of governments as the people fought for change. It was during the 1790’s that Napoleon Bonaparte became known to the people as a strong military leader.
He invaded Russia on june 22nd 1941. He thought this would be a quick campaign, but just like his counterpart his army retreated fully by december 5th 1941. Both men began in late june and both are out by december. As there last days as leaders both men requested their armies to fight to the death. Napoleon was captured and sent to exile.

The French Revolution ended when Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius, stepped in and dismantled the Directory, which promoted middle class interests, and helped with financial crisis and food shortages. Napoleon crowned himself emperor of France, and made a new social order called the Napoleonic Code. Although there may be many reasons he reversed the spirit of the French Revolution, he modernized and changed the political and social construct immensely, for the good of France. The main trait that Napoleon is known for is his genius military mind.
