When Nebraska put the plan of the unicameral legislature into action in 1937 they cut government costs dramatically. The number of legislatures went from one hundred thirty-three when they were using the bicameral system to forty-three with the unicameral legislature. There were many reasons that Nebraska decided to use the unicameral system. The one-house system was much more efficient than the two-house system. The number of committees went down from sixty-one to eighteen, and five-hundred and eighty-one bills were brought up in 1937. In the session before that they had at least twice as many bills.
