By June 6 ,1944, the Allies ( made up of the U.S , Britain , Canada , and France) had sent 150,000 men to Normandy. The objective was to secure the 5 beaches that the Germans had Secured prior. The U.S’s 1st and 3rd division were supposed to attack Utah and Omaha beach. While the UK’s 50th and 3rd division were to attack Gold and Sword beach. Canada’s 3rd division was ordered to ambush Juno beach. The troops were dropped off by a new technology. Amphibious tanks had been made to go across the ocean and drive up on the beach to get the soldiers as far as they could. The Germans had an idea for this. It’s called Rommel’s asparagus. Allies also used the Mulberry Harbors. These harbors sustained the fuel the Allies would need. The fuel was supplied by P.L.U.T.O ( pipeline under the ocean). I may be describing the Germans as defenseless people but they actually had intel about the attack but lacked any knowledge of where they were going to arise. Field Marshal, Erwin Rommel commanded the German forces to the north of France. He believed the only chance he had of defeating the invading force before they got ashore, was to spread out his reserves on the coast so that they could attack the forces the were bound to land there. His superior, Westfield Marshal, Gerd Von Rundstedt wanted all the troops in one place. Believing that with numbers, comes power. He was a very old fashioned man like that. Since the two could not agree the had to balance. So some troops were commanded to fight on the northern coast but were not authorized to be deployed without the consent of their current leader, Hitler. The beaches were ranked among the troops and it was agreed that Utah beach was the easiest while omaha was the most unyielding.
