Why Did The Anasazi Disappearance

The Anasazi were an Indian Tribe, whose disappearance still remains to be a mystery today. They were a civilization built in as early as 1500 B.C… occupying what is known as the four corners (Roberts, David 2003). After building their cliff side pueblos, it is said the Anasazi abandoned their homes and belongings in Mesa Verde and left in a hurry. Based on the Navajo language, the word Anasazi translates as “ancient enemy” (“10 facts about Anasazi” 2015). They are thought to be the ancestor of the modern pueblo Indians. The Anasazi were hunters and farmers, they planted corn, squash, beans and many other crops. Researchers have tried to develop theories and scenarios but none have proven to be true. Dr. Michael Adler, an archeologist at Southern Methodist University… believes conflict arose when “claims and rights” came in and “people had to ask before they used”, the result may have been conflict and warfare (Johnson, George 1996). Archaeologists, have tried to come up with any solution they can by studying artifacts, ruins and even the plants and land around the cliff pueblos. These villages, well preserved by the dry climate and by stone overhangs, led the Anglo explorers who found them in the 1880’s to name the absent builders, “Cliff Dwellers” (Roberts, David 2003).
