They came here as pilgrims looking to escape the corruption of the English Anglican church. They wanted a fresh start with their families to pursue their faith the way they wanted to. The Puritan pilgrims of Plymouth were framers themselves, so they had no intention of using slaves. They were more self-sufficient and wanted to establish churches and schools at the center of their communities. The Puritans originally had good relations with Native Americans, but this friendship would soon fade as the pilgrim population grew too quickly and they felt the need to expand.
Religion was very important to the Puritans in the 1600s. John Winthrop a member of the Puritans gentry, wrote to his wife the ‘I am verily persuaded God will bring some heavy affliction upon this land.” A year later he went and lead a group of a group of puritans to New England. By the 1630s another twenty thousand Puritans would come to America. When John became governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he told immigrants that will have to guide people toward this holy ideal or they were not welcomed.
The Puritans sought to create a society that was more pure and righteous than the corrupt society they believed existed in England. The Massachusetts colonies were founded by Puritan separatists who left England in search of religious freedom. They believed that the Church of England was too hierarchical and corrupt, and they wanted to establish a society that was more focused on individual piety and a direct relationship with God. The Puritans emphasized education and literacy, and they believed that all members of the community should be able to read and interpret the Bible for themselves.
They wanted a chance to practice their religion without interference and to make a better life out of themselves. The Puritans influenced the development of the New England colonies, including Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, and Connecticut through the Puritans’ extreme theological values and ideas that create the theocracy, their hard work ethic that increases their economic stability, and their resistance to tolerate other’s different opinions.
The Puritans went aboard the Mayflower and arrived in Plymouth, where they settled. Puritanism originated within the Church of England during the 16th century and their mission was to purify the Church and to also establish a middle ground between Catholicism and Protestantism. They desired to purify the Church by eliminating every symbol of Catholic influence. In the year 1603 when James I became King of England, Puritan leaders asked for reforms to the Church including the abolition of bishops but this was denied. Contrary to what they had hoped, English leaders became more repressive and Puritans wanted a means of escape so they chose to sail to the New World (Kang 148).
In the year of 1630, a group of people known as the Puritans arrived to America and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston. The Puritans were similar to the Pilgrims in which they were Protestants from England who thought that their reforms of their church were “too Catholic” and needed to be changed further. The Puritans being unhappy with their reforms was the primary reason for leaving England and settling in America, while the Pilgrims stayed behind and were determined to change their reforms. When they came to America, they decided to keep some of their strict rules. For example, church was mandatory and if someone missed a day,

By hard working, integration of religion in politics, and social development of certain lifestyle practices, Puritans had a large influence on the development of the New England colonies from 1630s through the 1660s. The Puritans created a religiously repressive society that greatly influenced the overall development of New England. Regarding New England’s social development, the Puritans’ stress on community, family and education was advantageous because it caused the region to thrive with more families and small towns. Therefore, since Puritans were more likely to come to the New World’s families instead of individuals, New England had significantly more families settle there than in other regions of colonization. The Puritans based their lives on the covenants they made when they came to New England. The covenant was agreeing to base their life around God or face the consequences. When the Puritans broke the covenants they were punished by public humiliation, exile from the community, and even death ("Puritans (1600-1754)."). The Puritans were hellbent on keeping sin out of the colonies because many people watched their loved ones die on the journey to New England. They also suffered through a harsh winter and battled starvation so they took it upon themselves to do anything to “purify” the colonies ("Puritans (1600-1754).").
The values held by the Puritans influenced the political, economic, and social development of the New england colonies in many ways. The Puritans were very strict when it came to religion. Massachusetts was sought out to create a holy commonwealth. In the New England colonies only member of the church were allowed to vote. The Puritans were so strict that some colonist formed other colonies after being expelled from Massachusetts.
The Puritans were the ones to find the New England Colonies. The Puritans got that title because they were trying to purify the Anglican church. The Puritans believed that by settling in the Americas their life would be better.
More than 80% of Americans have Puritan ancestors who emigrated to Colonial America on the Mayflower, and other ships, in the 1630’s (“Puritanism”). Puritanism had an early start due to strong main beliefs that, when challenged, caused major conflict like the Salem Witch Trials. Puritanism had an extremely rocky beginning, starting with a separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Starting in 1606, a group of villagers in Scrooby, England left the church of England and formed a congregation called the Separatist Church, and the members were called The puritans (“Pilgrims”).
Political, economic, military, and social factors were taken into account during the revolution. These aspects of the war all played a significant role in the outcome of the American Revolution. Since Great Britain was in a tremendous amount of debt, it started social and economic issues with the colonies. The French and Indian War (Seven Years War), fought between the British and the French over the Ohio River Valley was a huge contributing factor to said debt.
