In the year 1918, a Civil War broke out in Russia. There were two sides fighting: The Red army (the Bolsheviks) and the White army, which were the ones that supported the Tsar Regime and office officials. The Reds were fighting to keep the power that they gained in the October Revolution while the Whites were fighting to overthrow the Reds. Even though the White army did gain control of some areas in Russia and the Reds were not super skilled or one of the best military groups they still had certain tactics and qualities that helped them win the civil war in 1921. When compared to the Whites, the Reds were a better military force due to the resources they had, where they were located, their leadership skills and unity.

By the end of 1917 the Bolsheviks had control of Petrograd, Moscow and the land in between both places, that area was the capitals and heartland of Russia. Their power was concentrated in a small area. The Bolsheviks also had control of over 80% of the population, this was an advantage since they had a bigger number of troops to move in and out when needed. Since the area that the Reds controlled was a big industrial center, it helped supply the soldiers out on the battlefield. The Red Army has access to the Trans-Siberian railway, which meant they had better communications. They were able to transport troops, supplies and artillery from base to base faster. The three large White Armies were separated from each other by hundreds of miles, they were spread out all over the countryside. That made resource transportation really hard since there was no way of communicating with each other.
