Picture this, a large country. It has phenomenal architecture and a sound government. The citizens can easily find a job, and are happy living where they are. Now picture this, a worn down city. Buildings are falling apart, roads are crumbling, and crime is rampant. The people are unemployed and homeless. Can you believe these two scenarios both happened to one empire? In the third century, the once great empire of Rome collapsed. They had conquered most of the area around the mediterranean, but they were having problems. They had several invaders from the north, their politicians were corrupt and they were dying from lead poisoning Although, they were not even the worst problems. Excess military spending is when the government spends so much money on the military, it has no money left for other necessities. One reason the Roman Empire collapsed was because of excess military spending. The Roman empire spent the majority of their money on the military. WIth the land they conquered, they had to hire new soldiers. This lead to a lack of money for other things such as, upkeep and education. They also had to heavily tax the Roman citizens. The taxations cause businesses to shut down because no one had enough money to buy from them. People had to live on the streets because they could not afford rent because of their taxes. The government could not pay for education because they did not have any money to pay for it. The Roman people would not be able to afford the education anyways. When you cannot go a minute without hitting one, is when you know things are bad. Urban decay is when a city falls into a state of disrepair. The roads oar filled with holes, the buildings are falling apart, and littering is a huge problem. The Roman empire was affected by urban decay. The buildings that had been created, were falling apart. The lower class that were living in these buildings were in constant fear of the building collapsing. They also had several living on the streets because of their buildings being in such a state of disrepair. When the buildings did eventually collapse, some of the people living in them had nowhere to go. The less fortunate ones were killed as the building collapsed. With the people living on the streets it made the cities unsafe and unhygienic.With all the people living on the streets, people were scared to go outside. This led to no one going to participate in the government out of pure fear. They also could not go out to find a job out of fear, but it is not like there were any jobs available anyways.
