In Katherine Paterson's novel, Lyddie, Lyddie the main character is forced to move away from her farm, and her life changes because of it. Before Lyddie started working in a textile mill in Massachusetts, she lived with her family her mom hired her out to work at a tavern and she got fired shortly after. She moved away to Lowell, Massachusetts with the help of other people she started living and working in a textile mill, so she can pay off the debts at the farm. Which changed her life forever. Lyddie should leave the factory, despite getting free shelter, and making lots of money. It's not worth it because she gets treated very poorly, and the food she gets given is moldy. My evidence is “The taste of the meat was a bit off or the potatoes moldy”(pg98). This shows why Lyddie should leave the factory because she could get very sick and if she is sick she can't work, so she can't make money and can pay off the farm debts. Also, she might have to spend money that she doesn't want to spend, on a doctor because the factory won't pay for it. My second reason why Lyddie should leave is that Mr. Marsden would touch Lyddie without her consent. My evidence is “He was bringing his strange little mouth closer and closer to her fiery face”(pg129). This evidence shows why Lyddie should leave the factory because Mr. Marsden was grabbing Lyddie and trying to kiss her which is assault and Lyddie can't tell anyone or stick up for herself because she would get fired from the job, or get demoted and not make as much money. The treatment and well-being of the girl weren't very good the mill worker, especially Mr. Marsden Lyddie would be assaulted and harassed.
