Online Degrees Fall To Traditional College In this century the use of technology is being more and more integrated within classrooms and workspaces. This convenience of online college courses and education in technology has led to the development of obtaining online degrees. They say that online degrees are slowing taking down traditional brick and mortar colleges. American author and columnist, Charles A. Murray argues, “But colleges and universities will not need to exist because they provide a community for scholars” (Murray 243). I believe the lack of credibility, collaboration, and communication online college degrees provide for students, makes them less of an applicant in their field majors. They say, “We are now watching the early expressions of those possibilities: podcasts and streaming videos in real time of professors’ lectures, online discussions among students scattered across the country, online interaction between students and professors, online exams, and tutorials augmented by computer-aided instruction software” (Murray 243). With all the positives of technology integrated into education there are even more negatives. Through video chatting, podcasts and much more the basic soft skills of a student are diminished. The more online sources of knowledge we find the more it is shared for all to see. The use of technology is supposed to help us become smarter, but in obtaining a degree it is only hurting students. I believe that online courses only set students up for failure because they do not fully support or teach what is taught in the classroom. How can online degrees prepare you for that ten minute presentation you have to give to your boss about your new idea? It cannot instill professionalism and flexibility that one will need in the conference room. How can students gain integrity when exam answers and quiz answers are all online from past students? The amount of credibility students have with an online degree is minimal because of lack of experience and skills they do not achieve. Along with credibility comes collaboration. They say online degrees are a great opportunity to manage life with college with multitasking. Also online college is not nearly as expensive as traditional college. They argue that online college can prepare a student for his or her profession, still connect to professors, complete proper assignments, and most importantly discussions. Some argue that online degrees are new and upcoming and businesses accept such forms of education. Jeff Caplan, dean of strategic management at American Sentinel University (online) says, “Online degree programs are designed to help adult learners with busy lives earn their degree without being tied down to class times and without having to go to campus” (Zupek, 2010).
