The beauty of words is that they live on forever, but perhaps this is not so true. School districts are compromising the eternal knowledge that books offer by banning literature they deem unsuitable. To preserve and strengthen school education, it is imperative that schools do not censor books. Book censorship is directly unconstitutional. As stated in the First Amendment of the Constitution, it is within U.S. citizens’ rights to practice freedom of speech, and when schools ban books, they violate a basic right (The Constitution). By committing this unlawful act, school districts are taking advantage of young students who are not aware of their rights. Representation for students could exist if schools had all kinds of books available. Freedom of expression is essential to a successful education, as it helps “incorporate critical inquiry” (McClure). These analytical skills are necessary for stimulating free thought. Otherwise, children do not learn how to think for themselves.
Schools achieve the opposite of what they truly desire when they ban books. Parents and educators who believe controversial media “allow easy access to potentially dangerous texts” (Book Banning) are misconstruing the point. Banning books shelters young minds from the real world. Part of growing up is learning the complexities of life, but “removing these books from libraries denies students the opportunity to explore these subjects in a meaningful way” (Book Banning). Students who lack exposure do not grow up to understand the different perspectives of life. Additionally, the authors of controversial books intend for the subject to be complicated. These books exist for the purpose of making a point. “Banning books is an overall loss for a school or library, it only limits human growth” (New York Times). The reason these books exist is to make people learn. Real issues spark interest and then the topic receives the awareness it needs. Awareness and understanding are the true results of an uncomfortable
