The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas is a novel that gives young African American girls a chance to have a voice. This book is stolen right from their hands at many schools. The school's reason is “putting police in the wrong light”. The book has now been taken off the shelves at many schools, stealing the chance for girls to learn their voice against injustice. This is happening at many schools around the country. The censorship of books should not be allowed in schools for reasons such as defies the first amendment, limiting expression, and books help people learn about themselves. Book bans have a history of controlling expression especially in minorites. For example World War II book bans were used to control Jewish people and systematically eracticate them. Salem Press encylopedia states “ Censorship and banning of book has long been associated with totalitarian tactics…” Nazi Germany was a totalitarian form of goverment. Bans were commonly put in place. The book being banned where banned for reasons vague and bendable. Such as not fitting the proper German ideal. The government even took it as far as burning the books that broke its standards . This was cruel way of stealing someones identity from them. Burning book that meant a lot to the Jewish community. It stole the chance they had at continuing their studies and faith in what they believed in. The government took their chance to believe in what they believed in. Books can offer a chance for kids to learn a new perspective on topics. For example in fiction novels the main character faces adversity and the character has to face and overcome those challenges. In books the author makes the characters come to life in a way. Making them have faults and strengths makes them a person with feelings and makes the reader feel something whether it be anger or sadness. The purpose of fictional books is to entertain and gain a new perspective on something. For example When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed shows what life was like when Omar was in a refugee camp. Most readers gain the perspective of how grateful they should be for what they had. Omar had a tough childhood and reading his story can really get kids thinking about what they should be thankful for. Books always have a theme in them so adolescents can alway learn from
