Underdogs Take the Title

Round 15: Rocky has two swollen eyes, a broken nose, and is bleeding all over. Apollo Creed is bruised around his face and bleeding. Both are very tired. Rocky can’t see, he is knocked down for six seconds. Mickey cuts his eye to reduce the swelling and Rocky goes back into the ring. Rocky gives every punch all that he’s got right into the right rib cage of Apollo Creed. He throws ten hard, fast, accurate punches, then the bell rings and Rocky is declared the winner. The original Rocky film ends just this way, the underdog coming up from behind and actually winning the supposedly forged fight. One main point made in both stories is that the results aren’t over after the match. The winner and loser are declared but both players are beat up, injured, and in need of medical attention. In Rocky after his first match he comes home to his apartment and talks to his pet turtles. He says, “If you guys could sing and dance I wouldn’t have to get beat up like this anymore.” Rocky only boxes out of necessity. He boxes because he needs the money. Obviously he hates being constantly injured, but he keeps coming back for more. As the movie continues, we watch as his cut above his eye heals. It isn’t until about the third week of training that his injury is not completely visible. The long-term effect on the boxer are also explained in The Power of One when Doc talks to Peekay during their last piano lesson before the match. The way that Doc is speaking to Peekay you can tell that he is uneasy about the idea of Peekay fighting much older and stronger boys. Peekay senses the uneasiness and thinks that Doc is worried that the piano will take a back seat to boxing. Doc cares about Peekay and doesn't want him to get
