In the late 1800s, Europe was scrambling to conquer vast amounts of land. Imperialism had swept the continent by storm, with many countries vying for pieces of Africa and Asia to control. From 1880 to 1900, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy fought for African possessions and by 1900, nearly the whole continent had been split and placed under European rule. There was plenty of motivation for Europeans to conquer the world, and while some supported it, others didn’t. Most people in Europe at this time held ethnocentric views toward the “uncivilized” cultures in the world.
There is a lot of people going through things like America who use the human rights that the countries came together and made something called the human rights. Yet have these rights been actualized, no and places like in South America there is still child slavery. Can it be possible? Yes, this could and there are many ways this can be possible, and it maybe won’t happen in my age but maybe in others. The book Night by Elie Wiesel was a very tragic book yet even during the time of the holocaust there were people who helped spread human rights in when they were in a great demise of Hitler.
Katherine DeLong Professor Lampley RSOC 184 December 10, 2015 Final Project During this quarter, we have discussed in depth the interwoven nature of race, nation, and religion. These three concepts have proven to be deeply intertwined, to the point of inextricability. In order to discuss one of the three categories, one must simultaneously consider the repercussions of the other two. This concept has become clearer throughout the course, and it has taught me a lot about how these facets interact.
One example of institutionalized racism that was demonstrated in 13th is the mass incarcerations of minorities. I think it is a problem not only because there is a disproportionate amount of minorities but also because people do not realize this is happening. It is institutionalized racism because after being in prison these minorities cannot vote or get a job and therefore puts them at a disadvantage. I think getting people to realize this problem is the first step to address it but I am not sure what should happen next.
Mexican American studies is a class offered to many students around the world so that they can learn about their ethnicity and culture backgrounds. In the documentary Precious Knowledge, there had been about 48% of Mexican American students from Tucson High that would drop out of school or not graduate. Then they decided to get an ethnic studies class. The class was a huge success and since then Tucson High had close to 100% of students graduating every year, and 85% going on to college.

Racism refers to any action, intentional or unintentional that subordinates a person or group based on their race or skin color. Institutions, just like individuals can behave in a racist manner by adopting policies, practices, and procedures that exclude or favor individuals of a particular race thus denying another access to and quality of goods, services, and opportunities. Institutionalized racism is structured into social and political institutions. Examples of institutionalized racism include negative treatment of individuals to deny them health, employment, education, or housing benefits. In some neighborhoods, property value depends on the racial makeup of the people within that community.
On page 177 Tayo is asking himself an important question. " Why did he hesitate to accuse a white man of stealing but not a Mexican or an Indian?" Silko brings that question up for a few reasons. One, to show the superiority whites had over minorities. If Tayo did accuse a white man of stealing, no one would believe him.
This is a perfect example of institutional racism where youth come from low- income families are place in environments to set to fail. On the other hand, youth that come from affluent families are given opportunities and resources where they are set to be successful in their education. In this article, Staples discusses the treatment of African Americans by U.S. police, emphasizing the history of racial profiling and discriminatory treatment. Staples focuses mainly on the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. who got arrested in his home located in Cambridge, Massachusetts which relvealed the sharp racial divide over what police could do to innocent black people. Robert goes on to explain that the racial underpinnings cause the majoritity of the public to favor law enforcement as a slutionto crime. Robert claims the political support for U.S. legal discrimination leads the people against minorities in criminal penalties over small crimes which usually are nonviolent offenses. Nativism is the belief that your country and heritage is better than other nations; and that immigrants that may arrive from other nations are not as valuable as the people who are the citizens of your nation. Likewise, nativist believe that immigrant are dangerous, and threaten the lives of citizens of their domestic country. With that in mind, nativist may advocate for building a wall to keep people from coming into the country, or may reject immigrants of a different country and religion. On the other hand, racism is the belief that your race is better, and superior to another person’s. For instance, racism does not care about a country, but rather holds an ethnic group superior.
