1) Why do you think Weber makes this argument?
I think that Weber makes this argument that Protestants are more economically rational and truer capitalists because of the overwhelming evidence he has received in compliance with this claim. Also, at the time Weber published this book, the United States was right in the middle of the second industrial revolution. The effects of the revolution on wealth and capitalism, were relevant, current, interesting, and obvious changes worth discussing.
2) What are the implications, if he is correct?
If Weber was correct, he implied that Protestants are more economically rational, solely due to their religion. Weber argued that, although, for many reasons, it would make sense that Catholics were more capitalistic, Protestants were. Weber also claims that due to this finding, capitalism has intimate ties to religion.

To back up his argument, Weber discusses his observations, which have lead him to make this claim. For example, Weber says that in his experience, richer districts converted to Protestantism. Weber goes one step farther to say that Protestants turn more towards capitalism due to their inherited wealth. Weber also claims that Catholics are more otherworldly and ascetic than Protestants, which therefore makes them indifferent to material gain. In order to discuss capitalism’s intimate ties to religion, Weber quotes Benjamin Franklin because according to Franklin, it is an ethic for an individual to have the “duty” to prosper.
