The functionalist theory views society as a harmonious system, in which everything is balanced and relies on off one another in order to function. However, what happens when someone is born into the world, who doesn’t fit society’s perfect balancing act? Does society get thrown off balance, and topple over, or are do the people who don’t fit into the society pushed away the side and forgotten about? These are questions that become a reality to families when they have children who are diagnosed with physical and/or mental handicaps. Will society help adapt to the needs of their differences or will the family have to fight for their rights, to be a part of the society? We can start to understand and answer these questions from a functionalists
