Although all of these theories hold truth in some regard, and most likely contributed to his eventual death, the ultimate cause of Poe’s death was cooping. Cooping is a method of voter fraud that was used by gangs in the 19th century; an unwary victim would be kidnapped, drugged, disguised, and forced to vote for a specific candidate several times (Geiling). Many said Edger Allan Poe died of rabies or alcohol, but l have another idea of his death. In fact, to me , he died because of a brain tumor, that alcohol helped aid into his death. One reason I believed he died of a brain tumor, is Matthew Pearl notice a chimp on Poe’s skull , 3 decades later. He consult forensic pathologist, who believed this was a brain tumor.
Poe was a drunk but he could also be genius at some points in time. I think Poe died from too much alcohol. I think this because Poe was known as a drunk. And, it would be pretty obvious if he had rabies because you would be able to tell. If Poe died of rabies he would have most likely got it from his cat but, his cat didn't have it.

The reason why I believe it is rabies is because his symptoms were too severe and life threatening to be related to just alcohol. One reason of why I believe Poe died of rabies is because he exhibited signs and symptoms of late effects of rabies.

Perhaps it was not that Poe was drunk, yet crazed - the resulting effect of rabies. According to Doctor Henry Wilde, Edgar had all of the features of encephalitic rabies. Although it might be coincidental, it is very much possible. After being brought to a hospital, Poe had been hallucinating, heavily perspiring, and shouting at imaginary companions on the walls. "I become insane with long intervals of horrible sanity" (Poe), said the misguided poet.
Around the year 1845, an infamous literary writer named Edgar Allan Poe wrote a poetry piece deemed, "The Raven." This piece was a staple in Poe's career, allowing him to grow becoming one of the most preferred poets due to "The Raven" garnering him so much popularity. On October 9th, 1849, tragically Poe (at the time) mysteriously died. No one was seen around him at the time nor spoke to him; this was a mystery that no one could solve easily. As time passed, his death continued to be a mystery.
Poe’s death explanation of rabies seems to fit in the mystery of his death. For example in the article “Poe’s Death is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” it claims, “Poe refused alcohol and could drink water only with water. Rabies victims frequently exhibit hydrophobia, or fear of water, because it is painful to swallow”(The New York Times). This is an exceptional piece of evidence as it shows a symptom of rabies and it matches Poe’s actions of his last days. This is also the only logical piece of evidence that works for it as alcohol intoxication wouldn’t work for it or any other theory in that matter.
The decision I made to Edgar Allan Poe’s cause of death was being murdered. This is the right decision because my research and Socratic seminar relate to Poe’s conditions and appearances which support my decision. “Walsh argues that Poe actually made it to Philadelphia, where he was ambushed by Shelton’s three brothers,”(Catherine Townsend). This quote illustrates that Walsh’s brother didn’t want Poe with the reason that they probably didn’t want him to marry their sister since they were going to marry in 10 days as well as it supports Poe’s later conditions and appearances when he was at the hospital.
Gathering all the evidence, I believe that Edgar Allan Poe was a victim of schizophrenia. Although no one can be sure, considering no one was able to diagnose him, the symptoms do add up. Without all of our medical advances, no one can imagine what Poe went through his life. He may have let his feelings and thoughts flow into his numerous pieces of writing. Whether his feelings and emotions flowed into his writing, or he purposely wrote his stories like that, which would make him an even better writer.
Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe were Gothic novelists who lived and wrote in the 19th century. They both led unconventional and even controversial lives and their behavior could be described as unethical and scandalous. They both created characters who were inhuman and monstrous.
