My interest in helping others manifests itself in my life almost every day. Sometimes it is small tasks, such as carrying papers to the school office, hanging posters in the halls, or cleaning my guidance counselor’s shelves. Other times I enjoy taking on larger tasks, like operating the concession stand at the varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball home games, assembling consignment sale displays for my French teacher’s organization, or sitting with a struggling French student during their class to guide them through their work. Community service has taught me many skills including how to handle money, bake pumpkin pies from scratch, and how to keep stats for volleyball and basketball. During the 2016 primary election, I merged my love of helping people with my interest in politics by volunteering with the Bernie Sander’s presidential campaign by calling potential voters at a phonebanking event in my area. During sophomore year I struggled with negativity. I realized that I needed to take an active role in changing the world I lived in. I was inspired to join peer mentoring, an organization whose goal is to make a positive impact at our school. I also became involved in an organization called Johnstown’s Vision 2025, whose goal is to improve our city. The youth circle focuses on planning activities for young people to enjoy. I became a Saint Francis Upward Bound Program student ambassador at the end of my sophomore year. This provided me the the ability to attend the student advisory board meetings, where I was able to give the program’s directors my input on how to improve the program. I loved having this influence on my community and developed an interest in government. I believe that government has the potential of being the most powerful asset available to help
