“The giant panda is possibly one of the grossest wastes of conservation money in the last half- century” (Chris Packman). In “Why I Hate Pandas and You Should Too” the author Timothy Lavin argues that pandas are a “wasteful species”. Why should we save the giant panda? Are they worth saving? The pandas have been around a long time, and yes, we should defend them. It’s not an urge we feel, it’s an inspiration to assist pandas from the brink of extinction. Pandas have significance and are important to save and conserve.
What is the threats to the panda’s habitat and is it worth the effort to save it? The pandas live in the mountains in China. Lavin goes on to say that “Pandas don’t have much of a habitat left in the wild, thanks to heedless

Lavin makes a convincing argument about the panda’s difficulty with breeding, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to exist on this earth. Lavin goes on to say that “Females only ovulate for a few days each year, and if the mother does manage to have more than one cub, she abandons the weakling.” Consequently, the panda only has an opportunity to get pregnant a few days a year, so this does create some complications when trying to accommodate the pandas. However, they are still able to get pregnant and that will give us possibility to increase the population. Therefore, the mother sometimes does have more than one cub in the wild and in captivity. In the wild she may abandon the weaker of the two, so she must decide who is the strongest. This is a normal occurrence in the animal kingdom, and Lavin goes on to state that “That’s fine; nature’s mean.” Nevertheless, nature might be merciless; This is the formula that nature provides. So, some of the magnificent bears live and some don’t, but for the ones that do its importance is worth the sacrifice. Next, pandas do mostly live on bamboo and Lavin goes on to say that “Pandas consume 40 pounds of it a day, eating constantly, speeding up their own demise.” Although, they live on bamboo and eat it all day, it wouldn’t be such a tremendous concern had humans not devastated their landscape. It’s acceptable if they want to sit and eat bamboo all day, they are not
