Medical assistant list of responsibilities varies by the state. These are some of the main ones. They can prepare instruments for examination, by sterilizing and setting up for the physician. They prepare the patients by taking their vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiratory. MA's can also collect specimens for lab tests and perform STAT screenings. They can also relay the test result to the patient, but they can't diagnose or interpret them. Also while under the supervision of a doctor they can administer medication and in some states, they can start an IV line. They can pass on questions from a patient to a doctor by phone and can transcribe dictated medical documents for the doctor. MA's are very similar to LPN. They do the same work only that an LPN can do more of the clinical procedure, while under the supervision of an RN. Also, LPN makes more money than an MA. Even though it's not necessary for a medical assistant to get certified they have 4 exams to choose from they can take one or take all of them for a certification. The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) offering the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification. This is like the basic exam for a certification, you don't need specific requirements other than being a graduate of an accredited medical assistant school/program. This test will cover essential knowledge American Medical Technologists (AMT) offering the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification. This test needs some qualification in order for a Ma to take this test. If an MA meets one of the qualifications and has taken any of the other exams and passe, they might become certified without taking the RMA certification test.
