I’ve never really had to explain myself. To those who know me, I’ve always been smart, clever, and capable, the one you go to when you need something done. It was always assumed that I would achieve whatever I wanted mostly with ease and grace. I never had to try to pursue something beyond simply wanting it. This remained mostly true until I decided I want to be a Physician Assistant. The first real challenge of my life has been the question “Why do you want to be a Physician Assistant?”. It has been a few years since I first faced that question unable to answer it. I went to New York City to join a group of volunteers who came to help ease the burden on the healthcare system there. During this time, I met a few wonderful PAs who felt the same way I do. An innate desire to contribute which we channel through healthcare. I watched them do the work from the ground up, everything from setting up rooms to actual patient care. I was redirected but not deterred, I took it as an opportunity to gain a new experience. I applied to nursing school, was accepted, and began my program. The further I made it the more I realized while valuable, this would not be the end for me. I'd been encouraged many times to pursue more by teachers and peers. Nursing school hasn't provided me with the answers I need as an academic or as a healthcare worker. I have also evaluated if I would go after an advanced nursing degree to be a mid-level provider. The more I researched, the less desirable that path was. I feel unsatisfied with a nursing education. Being a Physician Assistant would give me the science background in medicine I strive for. I appreciate what nursing has brought me because of the skills and opportunities, however, I know I need to pursue an education as a Physician
