Academically, I’m primarily interested in biomedical and materials engineering. Johns Hopkins has the best biomedical engineering program in the country, and undergraduates have the opportunity to study BME, traditionally and through research. More importantly, the emphasis on interdepartmental collaboration, and student collaboration in general, makes it an ideal learning environment for me. I learn best when I work with others to create something better than any of us could come up with alone. For example, last summer I worked at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research where I learned about bioinformatics and computer science. The internship required me to compile and analyze data generated by other researchers. I spent most of my time working and talking with people who worked in other parts of the lab, and I became more appreciative of the benefits of collaboration. Since my sophomore year, I have volunteered with the organization First Star, which works with children who are in foster care. I worked at their Greater Washington Academy, which aims to get high school aged foster kids in the DMV area thinking about college and helps prepare them for life outside of the foster system. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with these kids and watch them grow over the course of several years. Johns Hopkins’ focus on community service, especially the Presidential Day of Service, definitely increased my interest in the university.
