The 25th of April is not in any way, shape or form just another day on the calendar! The 25th of April is a day when we bow our heads as a nation in remembrance of thousands of soldiers as young as me and as young as you. It is a day that represents what has given our country, the right to be free. It is a day that represents what has made us as a nation, become stronger. It is a day that represents the FIRST time Australia and New Zealand actually fought together, for each other and for the good of their countries. Most importantly, it is a day that represents those thousands of soldiers, who gave up everything. Their family, their possessions, their friends and for many, their LIFE. If we can’t dedicate one minute of our lives to them, then explain to me, how they dedicated several months, even years of their lives to us, their family, their children, their children’s children, and many generations to come. Is it even important anymore? What is ANZAC day? Well, come to think of it, why is ANZAC day still relevant? Over thousands of soldiers as young as you and as young as me, if not younger, went to war. But they are much more than just lifeless soldiers who fought at war. They are our ancestors, our heritage, maybe even our grandparents, their brothers, their mates and our future. These soldiers, OUR soldiers, made the choice to leave their beloved families behind and walk into a war zone. They were not forced to join this army; they were not chosen to join, they chose to join. Our soldiers prepared for months, years even but war ended many lives. They gave up so much more for us then we could ever imagine giving to someone. These soldiers, their friends and their family are what ANZAC day is all about.
