You’ve worked your butt off for this moment. You have your accomplishments, you have your resume, you have your college degree. Then when you least expect it, everything comes crashing down. They tell you, “I’m sorry, we were unable to hire you for this job”. You are heartbroken… What went wrong? The problem is, they never had a choice, they were forced to follow what society demands them to do. It is time to stop ignoring this unfair policy, to finally address the parasite of a problem that is currently present in the United States of America: affirmative action. Affirmative action actually increases racial tensions and further divides current racial barriers that America faces. By separating people based on their race, we are further dividing society in a discordant fashion. In fact, the Oxford English Dictionary states that the definition of affirmative action is: “an act of favouring those who tend to suffer from discrimination; positive discrimination.” The definition of affirmative action itself means that it encourages unjust and prejudicial treatment of different people. Does it make it fine since it’s ‘positive discrimination”? Last I checked, pretty much all types of discrimination ends up harming the greater community. That’s exactly what affirmative action does… It actually keeps societies aware of the barriers that divide it, perpetuating alienation and resentment among racially diverse groups, consequently increasing racial tensions rather than reducing them.
