In the old ages, when men leaded they had to do things that would insure the safety of the empire, but sometimes men go over the top and can become ruthless. Alexander the Great had to face things that were caused by his father’s ruling, but it counted against him. I believe Alexander was “great” because of his conquest to unite Greece and to him conquering Persia. He controlled his kingdom with an iron fist and that is needed when you have uprisings. When coming into power, Alexander was faced with one of the hardest obstacles, he had been having revolts in Macedonia, his homeland, but then Thebes declared Independence from Alexander. They did this because they thought since his father was a fierce leader, so they thought he would be. Thebes started to build defenses for the Macedonian army coming towards them ready to fight. This was a direct challenge against Alexander’s authority, so when he got there to fight the Thebans, Alexander waited three days for the Thebans to ask for peace. Alexander build a great city in his name, and it became the study center of some of the greatest Greek minds. In Persia after being conquered, Alexander showed much respect for the conquered, and adopted some of the Persian customs. He started to wear Persian clothes, but Persians say he appointed Persian governors to rule and allowed Persian people to practice their religious believes. Alexander did not force men and women into his culture, but in reality he had his culture shifted every time he conquered someone new because he would take a part their culture and put it in his culture.
