Being raised in a musical family Duke ellington began playing piano and composing music.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 20, 1878. He was born to an alcoholic liquor salesman and a strong-willed mother. He was raised on the edge of poverty but exposed to the upper class’ way of life through visits with his mother’s wealthier family. When he was 10 he and his family moved from Baltimore to New York City. Growing up he would spend every moment consuming the works of Shakespeare and Percy Bysshe Shelley, developing a strong intellect.
He lived with his father, an attorney and notary, when he was growing up. During the last ten years of Beethoven’s life, he became completely deaf. However, he persisted his musical career. He had to retire from performing as a musician, but he still worked as a composer. Even though he sustained his career as a musician, his inability to hear impacted the style of his music.

Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most well known Classical composers in music history, born into a family of musicians and was seen by his father as a profitable prodigy and had several of his piano compositions published by the age of twelve. He was the first successful freelance composer and changed the way music was composed and performed as he composed pieces that defied the standard ways of composing during the Classical era by using an expanded form structure, larger orchestra, dramatic themes and replaced minuet and trio with scherzo and trio making the third movements of his symphonies faster than traditionally performed. He also treated instruments as individuals instead of grouping them together such as the bass instruments which originally formed the Basso continuo. Beethoven experimented with the ways an instrument could be played , creating new sounds, and would have large pitch ranges between instruments which aided in the expressiveness and drama of his pieces.
Beethoven is well known for his deafness and his ability to still create many compositions although he could no longer hear. His deafness depressed him immensely shown by a letter written to a one of his friends named Franz Wegler, in which he wrote, “I must confess that I lead a miserable life. For almost two years I have ceased to attend any social functions, just because I find it impossible to say to people: I am deaf.” (“Ludwig van Beethoven Bio”, 2017). Many compare him akin to Mozart and Beethoven, and though his life was short lived, he made the most of what he had. Felix Mendelssohn was one of the greatest composers of the 1800s, or the Romantic era in music history. Born in Hamburg, Germany on February 3rd, 1809 to Leah Salomon and Moses Mendelssohn, he was lucky to have been born and raised in a prosperous middle class family.
He was born into a middle-class family which allowed him to be able to have the ability to have access to music at an early age. His mother was a key figure in his life when it came to music. She encouraged him to seek out a musical instrument when he was young. He started playing the piano very early in life, around the age of six, and it soon became clear to his family that he had a natural talent for it. He went on to study the piano and take piano lessons, per his family’s suggestion, soon after his talent was discovered.

In musical form he was a considerable innovator because he widened the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto, and quartet music. He studied with Haydn and soon he gained his reputation as a virtuoso pianist that often showing his ability of improvisation during performance. Beethoven’s career as a composer can be categorized into three periods: (1) the peak of Classical period where most of his works shown influences of his teacher Joseph Haydn, as well as influences from other great musicians of all time such as Mozart.
