The United Nations defines peacekeeping as "the deployment of international military and civilian personnel to a conflict area with the consent of the parties to the conflict in order to stop or contain hostilities or supervise the carrying out of a peace agreement”(Parliament of Canada).In Canada, there are 69 % of Canadians thought peacekeeping is "a defining characteristic of Canada". By 1990s, over 50,000 Canadian soldiers had become peacekeepers. Canadian continue involve actively in many international agencies and agreements in order to maintain the peace. First of all, Canada did many financial support in Ban landmine agreement. Since Canada was the first country to ratify the Ban Landmine agreement, Canada has provided over $100 million to the Landmine Fund in order to support mine action programs in over 25 countries. The economic support that Canada spent really improve the international landmine issue. This agreement reduce the possibility of the war which brings the peace to everyone. This amount of money is worth because it has kept the world in peace. In addition, during the process, Canada negotiated the landmine problems with other countries in order to reach an agreement. For example, the Canadian government hosted an International Strategy Conference to persuade other countries reduce the use of mine. In this conference, there are more than 50 countries participated. Canadian government declared, "It is the understanding of the Government of Canada that, in the context of operations, exercises or other military activity sanctioned by the United Nations..."(United Nation Treaty Collection). As a result, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy signed the Treaty of Ban Landmine with 122 governments. This agreement provides many specific protections for international missions in order to stop the use of landmine. The landmine agreement helps against any types of landmines in order to keeps holding the security and peace. Furthermore, Canada plays a leadership role consistently in promoting the Ban Landmine Agreement. In 2002, Ross Hues, a Canadian, was appointed Ambassador for Mine Action who serves on everything that pertaining to the implementation of the convention.
