Christopher Columbus was a disastrous leader who was motivated by his own personal greed of finding a westward passage into China and India. Throughout Christopher Columbus’s explorations; he ended up getting many Spaniards killed in an attempt to please his own motives. During Columbus’s first voyage, he ended up getting 39 of his sailors killed by his naïve thinking and lack of defensive planning amongst a foreign land and population. After his shocking discovery of his crew being killed on his newly established colony, Hispaniola, Christopher Columbus moved his people east in a more inhabitable part of the Caribbean.

Christopher Columbus had a ridiculous idea to venture off into a ocean that had never been sailed before. He hoped to find a new passage to Asia unknown to mankind. In 1492 his idea became a reality and he was able to sail the ocean with the financial help of Queen Isabella from Spain. We should characterize Columbus and his legacy positively. Columbus was an intelligent person who had a good effect on the Americas. His voyages (indirectly) started the Columbian Exchange, which had mostly positive effects on both America and Europe. He was a (mainly, because nobody is perfect) good person, and should be credited for it. Columbus played a big part in shaping our country, which is a very important aspect when characterizing a person.
His motivations were like those of most men in that time: God, Gold, and Glory. Columbus wanted to become rich by finding the spices that were in Asia and he also wanted to prove that Asia wasn’t really that far from Europe. He also wanted to spread Christianity through his journey. As well as his theory being proven correct, he also had many things to gain. In his journal it states, “[Your Highness] ordered me to proceed with a sufficient armament to the said regions of India, and for that purpose granted me great favors, and ennobled me that thenceforth I might call myself Don, and be High Admiral of the Sea, and perpetual Viceroy and Governor in all the islands and continents which I might discover and acquire, or which may hereafter he discovered and acquired in the ocean; and that this dignity should be inherited by my eldest son, and thus descend from degree to degree forever.”
In doing so, he found wealth more than any of his mates could have imagined. He laid the framework for European countries to cross the Atlantic and acquire wealth in new counties. Christopher Columbus decided he would try his hand at exploration. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella funded his crossing of the ocean and in return, Columbus would bring back wealth he would find. In 1492, he set sail with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. Many people viewed Christopher Columbus as a villain. There are a lot of reasons they could view him as an villain, one being Columbus killed a lot of Native Americans. Columbus brought diseases to the New World which killed off a lot of them. Another reason would be he set up the stage for the slave trade. At the same time, many people view Columbus as a hero.
