One of the biggest creation in the 19th century was cotton and the Cotton Gin. Cotton played a huge factor in slavery, and the way they used it. Cotton helped grow the south’s economy and many of the slave owners depended on it. Before cotton, the go to source in the south was rice and tobacco. People didn’t really think much of cotton. A special type of cotton was the Petit Gulf, it was made in Rodney, Mississippi (lecture). Petit Gulf cotton grew tightly, which allowed for people to produce more. The other good thing about Petit Gulf was that it very cheap, which made people buy more of it. By 1900, the south had produced more than five million pounds of cotton (Lecture). The Confederacy had won at Bull Run, which forced Abraham Lincoln to promote General George B. McClellan as leader of the Union army (Lecture). There were a lot of supporters for Abraham Lincoln, which was important for the Union. The Peace Democrats, also know as “Copperheads” sided with Lincoln (Yawp, 12). They wanted peace and wanted Abraham Lincoln to negotiate a peace treaty with the Confederacy. The War for Emancipation in 1863 would be the final straw of the war. As the years go on, The Union gets stronger and start to dominate the Confederacy. On September 22 after the Union wins the battle at Antietam, the Emancipation Proclamation coms in effect (Lecture). The Emancipation Proclamation is the official document that ensures all slaves be free in the rebellion states. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Civil War was the most important thing to happen around the 19th century. More than 75,000 deaths occurred which is one of the bloodiest battles in American history.
