Cuneiform was one of the first systems of writing, developed in ancient Mesopotamia by the Sumerians. Early on it provided a way for transactions to be recorded, particularly those involving the temple, though as it developed it expanded to record a wider range of ideas including codes of law and religious stories. Cuneiform also spread about the region of Mesopotamia, seeing use from a variety of different peoples over a very long period of time.
