Why Is Elie Wiesel Still Relevant Today

When Elie Wiesel was a boy, the Nazis took him to Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp. He suffered a great deal here and even witnessed his father's death. Until 1944, little action was taken to help Jews. Elie didn’t think it was right to sit back and watch unrighteousness occur. He said,”There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” During the war, regular people could have helped hide Jews, or refused to turn them in. People cannot just stand still and watch others suffer. You should speak up for everyone, no matter the cost. Elie didn’t stay silent, even if it didn’t effect him. He spoke up for victims of genocide and oppression all over the world. Elie said,”As long as one dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true. As long as one child is hungry, our lives will be filled with anguish and shame.” We should stand up for everyone, because if they suffer, we suffer. If they are not free, we are not free. Nobody protested this, even though thousands of lives were at stake. He doesn’t want the same for others, so he believes that even when you are outnumbered, even if there is little chance for your success, you should always protest against wrong. People usually don’t try putting themselves in a victim's shoes. But if they did, they wouldn’t want the same to happen to them.
