The allegory was quite common during the Renaissance, similarly to Erasmus, many authors and philosophers used allegorical literature for moral and political teachings. For example, Adagia, was a long collection of proverbs. They were compiled together and annotated by Erasmus. He considered a Silenus to be something that is ugly on the outside, but once you open it up, the inside is extremely beautiful. He equates adages, or proverbs, to the silenus. Although they may appear small, vague, and irrelevant, a proverb holds a much deeper meaning that can help guide you through a virtuous life if you allow it.
