Fahrenheit 451 shows how our society benefits from literature. The book is a great example of how literature benefits our society to this day. For example, we live in a society where we can think for ourselves; we have daily advancements, and we have a better understanding of what is going on in the world. In our society, we have the freedom to think, unlike Fahrenheit 451. Televisions are used to distract the society from using their minds. "Books aren't people. You read and I look around, but there isn't anybody!" (Bradbury 69). Mildred watches her television without thinking and realizing she is sitting alone in her living room. It creates a visual without thinking about what is happening. Unlike when reading a book, when you have to use knowledge you know and keywords to create the visual of characters and the scenery. There is no real connection between the characters. In this society, it makes the characters seem like they are not real people, instead they are all just talking about themselves. The authors use the setting to show how society has become more individualistic and less accepting of each other. "Nobody listens any more. I can't talk to the walls because they're yelling at me. I can't talk to my wife; she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say. And maybe if I talk long enough, it'll make sense." (Bradbury 78).
