General Zaroff and The Atrocity That is Hunting Humans
Hunting animals or people for sport is cruel, unethical, and unfathomable. Human beings like General Zaroff, who believe that hunting the weak of humankind is acceptable are ruthless monsters. I strongly disagree with General Zaroff’s way of thinking.
Hunting humans is cruel and inhumane. Zaroff claims he is “civilized”(14) yet he says he hunts humans because it gives him “pleasure”(14). No civilized person would ever commit such an atrocity much less feel enjoyment from the horrific action. He tries to justify himself by saying men can “reason”, “so they are dangerous” (14). Yes, human can reason but it is how we use that reason that make us dangerous or peaceful. Zaroff also

It just doesn’t make sense. Gen. Zaroff says he only kills the “scum of the Earth,sailors”(14). He goes on to say that a good horse or dog is “worth more than a score of them”(14). Gen. Zaroff’s comment are horrible things to say and are not right. Fortunately he is wrong. When talking about this new animal, he states “it must have courage, cunning, and above all be able to reason.”(12). What our poor general does not see is that “courage, cunning, and reason” are what makes a human being the most valuable creature on the planet. What he does can not be …show more content…
Rainsford calls it “murder”(13). Most people perhaps psycopaths would find hunting humans unfathomable. However Zaroff says his “whole life has been a prolonged hunt.”(11). Perhaps Zaroff’s unbelievable actions are due to the fact that he was given his first weapin at five years old and killed his dad’s prized turkeys with it instead of sparrows. Then his father praised him for his good aiming. Then his first bear at ten years old. He has been hunting his whole life until he became the hunted. Zaroff’s mindset which lets him believ that it is ok to kill humans for fun, can be the cause of growing up killing animals and being groomed to be a killer. Maybe society can learn to raise their children with good morals, so that the unthinkable actions that General Zaroff commited can never happen again.
However maybe Gen Zaroff might have a good idea. Hunting humans can control population, people’s behavior, and illegal activity such as gangs and drugs. A smaller population would mean we would have access to more natural respources such as water. We would also be able to prevent the abuse of natural resources. If we can control people’s behavior then their can be a decrease in crime rate and domestic altercations. This effect over the years can ;provide a more safe and healthy enviroment for future
