In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee and the short story, “Only the Accused were Innocent”, by David Oshinsky, have many similarities. Two of these similarities that were important were that both judges were obviously disagreed or were troubled by the verdict and that both of the ladies that accused these men of raped to hide there own guilt. In the article “Only the Accused Were Innocent”,when the jury of the scottsboro trial had made their decision on the verdict the judge seemed to disagree with it, “But Horton, a wealthy landowner with deep antebellum roots in Alabama, was clearly troubled by the case”(Oshinsky). 14. This revels that even though Skeeter is aware all of the racism that goes in her community, she was still brought up in a way to look down upon coloured people. Even though Skeeter knows about all the racism she’s seen, at the end of the day she is still white thought to think coloured people aren’t as good as her. 15. I think this action would be considered inappropriate for a lot of the white woman in Jackson because Sketter did that to her own friend. She was disobeying her own colour and people would think poorly of Skeeter, and especially Hilly.
Harper Lee’s purpose in describing Atticus the way he does in To Kill A Mockingbird is directly used to convey the theme in the story. As Atticus is described as being one who does not judge or think differently about people based on their race, gender, or religious beliefs it is used by the author to establish the theme of innocence. This comes as Atticus is just so kind to everyone around him, no matter their background, it even has Miss Maudie even talking about him as being just so consistent and holding no grudges and due to the author making Atticus be seen this way it shows off the theme of innocence as when Atticus will defend a black man in court and Scout gets picked on at school she does not understand why due to her innocence. While the Puritans expressed their need of love and care for one another the exact opposite was show in Salem, Massachusetts. In June of 1692, Bridget Bishop was accused of bewitching and causing misery to the people in Salem. Her accusers blamed her for attending witch meetings, beating, choking, biting people, appearing to the people in a ghostly form, for odd behaviors in cattle, and the deteriorating health that caused deaths or fits among the children. It is obvious to see that the accusers used her as a scapegoat for the oddities they could not explain in their life. The judges accused Bridget of fabricating lies about her innocence in the trial when the accusers were quite painfully obvious of their deceit within their weak stories of
Minnie’s quilt, the dead bird and its cage, and the kitchen show that living in a man’s world is not easy. In the end, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale recognize that they too have experienced the same loneliness and mistreatment that led Mrs. Wright to murder her husband. The men don't value the women in this story and they don't see them as being very intelligent either. It is for this reason “A jury of her peers” is created. Peers being the women themselves as they stand up, united against the subjugation they have all experienced.
