In F Scotts Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby money is a valuable resource throughout the whole story becasue it shows that money can’t buy love or friendship. It also shows how people are when they have money and how the uses are different. It shapes the characters throughout the whole story, it can shape them in an effective way or even a bad way. Money in The Great Gatsby is all the same but depending on the characters that change, Tom and Daisy being old money there use for money is more personal in their everyday life, they know how to use and manage money. In The Great Gatsby Jay Gatsby tries to buy Daisy’s affection with his money by showering her in gifts and even trying to impress her with his house, in chapter 5 there is a scene where Gatsby is throwing away shirts that are expensive Daisy acknowledges his doings and says “They’re such beautiful shirts she sobbed her voice muffled in the thick folds” Daisy was emotionally upset that Gatsby was throwing away such nice shirts to wear to where she was sobbing into his shirts he was throwing away, his money went into those expensive nice shirts yet he is just throwing them away as if they were just nothing to him. Gatsby, known to have a lot of money and being wealthy, tends to use it to try to win over Daisy’s love. But Daisy loves Tom, she does care for Gatsby, but their run is over and it’s all in the past. In chapter 5 it says that Gatsby had tried and tried and tried but nothing was working to get Daisy back. “No amount of fire or freshness” can help Gatsby empty part of his heart. After Gatsby death Daisy left with Tom far away from home, showing that even after all the things that Gatsby did for Daisy, she did not even go to his funeral to say her goodbyes, showing that Gatsby money did not get him to be with Daisy.
