Why Is Piggy Important In Lord Of The Flies

In my personal opinion, Piggy is the most important character of William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies because he is what connects everything including the main characters of the book like Jack, Ralph, Simon, Samneric, and Roger. Without Piggy, the whole story would be different because Jack had a big hatred for Ralph for two reasons. The first reason is because he was jealous that Ralph was chief and that he wasn’t and the second reason was that he felt like Ralph favored Piggy more than him and the others. For example one of his smart ideas was when he said that he didn’t believe in ghosts and that the “beast” wasn’t real. “ ‘What I mean is...maybe it’s only us.’‘I don’t believe in no ghost---ever!’” (80-81). What Simon says is significant more to the readers than the characters in the book because it tells the readers that the real beasts are each other rather than it being a monster. Right after Piggy says that, Jack starts to yell at him and tries to start arguing with him until Ralph stops it. If Piggy wasn’t such an outcast to the boys and society, he would’ve been chief instead of Ralph. Having this trait also makes it easy for Jack and the other boys to pick on him. They all think of him weirdly because he isn’t able to do physical things like the rest of them. In addition, Piggy’s glasses make the other kids think he looks weird and they would make fun of him for that reason as well. Piggy being an outcast outholds him from a lot of things like socializing and sharing opinions. These are some things that were very well needed on the island. He only had a limited amount of time to share his opinions and that was when he had the conch. “ ‘We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us---’” (15). His and Ralph’s idea of having a civilization and keeping everything in order was Piggy’s best idea.
