To understand Shakespeare and why he is so important we need to look back to the Elizabethan period or the Elizabethan era, which is a period associated with Queen Elizabeth I's reign, 1558-1603, and is often seen as a golden age in the history of England.
It was the highlight of the English Renaissance and the English literature and poetry flourished. It was during this time the Elizabethan theater grew into an important part of British culture, and William Shakespeare, among others, wrote plays that were significantly different from England's previous play style.
