Why Is Starbuck Admirable

One of the main characters in Herman Melville's novel, Moby Dick, is a middle aged man named Starbuck. Starbuck is the first mate of Captain Ahab on a whaling ship. Captain Ahab becomes obsessed with having revenge of a White Whale he nicknamed Moby-Dick because it took his leg on a previous whaling excursion. Starbuck realizes that Ahab has gone insane and that chasing after the dream of capturing Moby-Dick will have severe repercussions on the crew. He tries to get the rest of the crew to see that Ahab has gone mad and that if they continue to follow him they will all end up dead. Starbuck has many admirable qualities some of which are his morals, his loyalty to Ahab and his good-naturedness. One of the qualities that Starbuck has that makes him admirable is his morals. Starbuck takes his Christian faith very seriously and that influences his morals immensely. Starbuck does not have a spirit of vengeance like Ahab does to find and kill Moby-Dick. The fact that he does not feel the need to seek revenge on the White Whale shows that he understands that it is just another whale and has no special significance. Starbuck is a very kind-hearted and sincere man. He cares for all of the crew and considered them as his family. He does not tolerate any discrimination against a specific race on the ship and thinks of them all as equal. Starbuck takes up for Daggoo when someone calls him a Negro and he says that there are no slaves on his ship, only whalers. At the end of the novel when the ship is sinking, Pip calls out for Starbuck because his leg is stuck. Starbuck decides to stay with Pip when he realizes there is no chance of freeing him. This shows that he is really sincere in that he gave his life in order to bring comfort to
