The book Fahrenheit 451 is a story of a fireman whose job is to burn books who later becomes a book-reading rebel, the quote, “... without books, one person can't be more or less intelligent than another person.” is located. The storyline in this book alines with the current censorship being presented in the United States. The book is also ironically connected with the case by currently being examined as a possible banned book. When looking at the argument as a reader, it's difficult to understand why people banned unique books that encourage questioning your opinions. The books also face the dark realities of history, the ugly parts that are difficult to learn about. The topics touched on in these books can also introduce different ideas from the ones possibly taught at home. For a change in our society, these change in ideas needs to be accessible to all individuals. This is not to influence but to teach about an alternative view to the one they have currently been introduced to. The opposite view is the people behind the fight to ban these books, which is parents hoping to protect their children. It is not completely a reaction of hatred, yet a reaction of fear. The parents are scared of the possibility of the young minds being persuaded by the controversial text. In the text Book Banning in 21st-Century America by Emily J. M. Knox says, “Book challengers are attempting to both make a statement and effect change within their communities institutions through their actions,” (Knox 121). Knox's job is to study those who are fighting to ban books, she follows this statement by saying the text they usually fight to ban do not aline with their beliefs. The main point to take away from this quote is that those fighting for book banning believe they are doing the right thing.
