Theodore Roosevelt quotes “Believe you can and you’re halfway there”. This quote is important because part of accomplishing something is being confident in yourself and believing in yourself. Theodore Roosevelt had a passion for helping others. He became the 26th president of the United States at age 42, becoming the youngest president. Theodore was not a president working for the money. He truly cared about helping the common people and was a role model to other leaders, which is why he is known for his eager personality, leadership skills, and his “big stick” approach. His mother’s family sent family care packages to the relatives behind enemy lines, and his father worked for Lincoln to help improve the condition of Union soldiers and their families. Throughout the war years there were many rough times at 28th Twentieth Street. These were the times that Theodore relished the excitement and secrecy of sending the contraband packages. He also dreamed of battle and glory as a Union soldier. The beginning of his political career began when he became the 33rd governor of New York from 1899-1900. On September 14, 1901, he became the United States president when President McKinley was assassinated. In 1904, Roosevelt was elected for his second term as president. His last day in office as a United States president was March 4, 1909.
Theodore Roosevelt is also known for his acts. In 1906, he passed the Meat Inspection Act, which made food safe for the consumer. He also passed the Pure Food and Drug Act, which made companies accurately label their products. Another law that was passed is the Square Deal, which is Theodore Roosevelt’s plan for reform. The Square Deal would entitle all Americans to an equal opportunity to succeed. Another is the Hepburn Act, which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to regulate the maximum railroad rates and extend jurisdiction. He increased the size and the power of the United States Navy and sent the “Great White Fleet” around the world for over a year to showcase America's new power and naval capabilities. Thanks to Roosevelt, the United States Navy that had began with 90 small ships quickly grew to a modern day navy with multiple fighting vessels. He helped lead negotiations to end the Russo-Japanese War, which led him to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Theodore also helped with the building of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal shortened the voyage for the United States Navy, which he believed would prevent enemies from targeting them. It also shortens the distance that ships have to travel to pass between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It takes nearly eight to ten hours to pass through the canal.
