“Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.”(Lee 119 ) To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee about two young kids named Scout and Jem who live in the town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. Maycomb is a town infected with racism like much of the south in that time, but it is also a quiet town where nothing really happens. That is until Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused by the Ewell’s, a white family, of raping their daughter. As Tom’s trial occurs, a chain of events is set into place that teaches Scout and Jem about the harsh reality of innocent people who fall victim to circumstance. That is why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because mockingbirds symbolize innocent people who are hurt by evil, and it is a sin to hurt innocent people.
Tom Robinson was a colored folk that was charged with a rape case. All this happens from chapter 17 to chapter 25. What happened was that this family named the Ewells blamed this colored man for raping his daughter Mayella Ewell. The story goes like this, one day Tom was passing by the Ewell’s houses and Mayella asked if he could help her chop down something for a nickel. He agreed and after that he didn’t accept the nickel.
2. In chapter 19 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is called to witness the events that happened the night of the rape. He was sweaty and nervous during his questioning and was even more nervous when Mr. Gilmer pointed out the fact that Tom felt sorry for Mayella. It says in the book that saying that was the worst thing he could have said because a black man, which was the lowest class in society, having sympathy for a white woman was a disgrace to the family. In chapter 24, aunt Alexandra says “The handful of people in this town who say that fair play is not marked White Only” (Page 270).

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Mayella Ewell is a powerful character. Mayella get’s her power from her class, race, and gender. Her power mostly comes from her race. Tom Robinson has been accused of rape by Mayella Ewell. Mayella race is where most of her power comes from.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the racism of the time nullifies the argument of the black Tom Robinson and makes the story of white Mayella Ewell the only feasible story. When there was a trial in the 1930s in the American south, the whites always one. When Mayella Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of raping her, the accusation still stood, despite the lack of any incriminating evidence against Tom. In the courtroom, the white jury never question Mayella’s words, even when she disrespects them. Mayella says, “That nigger yonder took advantage of me an' if you fine fancy gentlemen don't wanta do nothin' about it then you're all yellow stinkin' cowards, stinkin' cowards, the lot of you” (251).
The skin of her color later on caused Tom Robinson’s death. She might be low on the white social scale, however, she is still indeed, white. Due to the fact that she is white, the people of Maycomb joins her side because they’re afraid to accept the reality of a colored man being innocent. The support of the people in Maycomb increased Mayella’s power. During the trial, the people of Maycomb gasp at the moment when Tom revealed that he, “felt sorry”, for Mayella, the people were astonished to see a colored man pitying a white women.

After the revolution and death of the Russian Czar in 1917, Vladimir Lenin overthrew the short-lived democratic government that followed the end of Nicholas II, replacing it with a Bolshevik communist regime. (Background essay) His teachings were inspired by Karl Marx who was a German philosopher that believed society goes through certain stages: Capitalism, socialism, and finally communism. Lenin would then go on to establish the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1922 which slowly led to the rise of the USSR as one of the superpowers of the world. In today’s society, many mysteries about the Soviet Union lurk among the world and textbooks should emphasize three certain things to bring light to the subject of the Soviet Union.

The first example of the consequences of racial inequality is the African American community in Maycomb.
Tom Robinson is a young African-American who's been accused of raping and abusing Mayella Ewell, a young and closeted white woman. Racial discrimination is hinted throughout Tom’s trial as Atticus Finch explains to Jem that a white man’s word will always win over that of a black man’s - "... In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (220). Atticus explains to Jem that in the courts of Maycomb, a black man’s state of innocence or guilt is truly determined by a white man’s testimony.
Bob Ewell, Mayella 's father, gets drunk and abuses Mayella. He possibly even sexually abused Mayella. Not to mention, Mayella had enough of the abuse and got an idea. In addition to this, Mayella thought since she was a white woman she could blame an African American man, Tom Robinson, of rape and if her father sees, he will
